Wenger: 'I don't sympathize of Liverpool because they did not give us Suarez.'25-08-2015 |
The manager of Arsenal, Arsene Wenger made a curious remark to Liverpool before tonight's derby between the two teams in the third round of the Premier League. The Frenchman said that he could not test any particular sympathy for 'red' because of the departure of Raheem Sterling, since two years ago, they refused to sell Luis Suarez of the Londoners.
'Gooners' tried to take the player in 2013, as they sent an offer by 40 million and 1 a pound, as they thought that it will trigger a release clause in his contract. Liverpool, however, opposed the deal, and a year later sold the Cannibal of Barcelona for 70 million pounds.
This summer, Merseysiders split with another major player in the face of Stirling, who became the most expensive purchase of Manchester City with paid 49 million pounds.
'Liverpool made its own decisions. They refused to sell Suarez to us, so now I can't feel a special sympathy for them.', said Wenger.
'I personally appreciate Sterling and you will illustrate this in a few years. I don't think he played much drama when leaving. Just during the transfer window, such things happen. During the season, the boy was quiet and did not make any stupid statements. I don't think up such a noise. If he would miss them? It's still a quality player. Two years ago, when Liverpool played with Stirling, Suarez and Sturridge, they scored over 100 goals. To accomplish that in the Premier League is special, you need players with the qualities to do it. Sterling is such a player.', added Wenger.
